Conversation Pieces pattern by The Caffeinated Quilter – Emily Breclaw. I love her original colors but not for my kitchen. I LOVE it in red! I enjoy the portability of EPP! I pieced and finished during my kids’ gym practice. It is my 2nd attempt at machine quilting.

This dresden pattern is by Vicki at Quilting Lodge blog. She was gracious enough to give the pattern away on her blog during the Dare to Dresden blog hop. Our guild challenge was for a small quilt with the theme Rhapsody in Bloom, so I changed it into a flower by adding the stem and leaf.

Liberty of London fabric swatches 4″ square were sent as a gift from an English quilting penpal and I had no idea what to do with them until I saw this design in an old quilting magazine. The gold fabric was purchased in Florida and it worked perfectly with the multi-coloured hexagons.

I came across English Paper Piecing at a Quilt Show some years ago. Seduced by the fabric, I bought a bag each of these tiny squares and hexagons, however the project became an UFO in due course after the first few rows. Last year I dragged it out again and completed it. So worth it in the end.

BB # 3725 (“Sam’s Quilt”) in scrap-happy shades of blue and green. This top is a WIP for the family room as Sam is a family name 😉

Full disclaimer: I tried out EPP but impatience got the best of me and most was done by machine. This block really is an ideal EPP project though!

Spring Flower Hexagons is entirely hand stitched. I’ve been saving fabric scraps from my quilting for the past year and was looking for something to do with them when I discovered and fell in love with the ancient craft of English Paper Piecing. Each of the hexagons is 1.5 inches across.

There’s one lonely snail hiding in the hand-embroidered border (visit my blog for a close-up look and see if you can find the snail). My Mom is always killing the snails & I rescue them by hiding them in her flower beds! The hexagons are 5/8″; I developed a techique to make the stars & whirligigs.

I have not done any EPP yet, but really want to try it sometime. I’m making a hexie quilt right now sewing it the traditional way. I love the watermelon table runner!

I have tried the english paper piecing, started to the grandmother flower garden…my tip would be to hand stitch all, was brutal trying to piece it together by maching… I put that aside for many years, have to take apart to correctly do it by hand 🙂

  3. Gailene Avatar

I’ve never done EPP because I know nothing about it. I’m relatively new to quilting and am just happy to be able to achieve nice things on small quilts. It certainly looks intriguing though and I like learning new stuff 🙂

I love EPP! It is a great to go progect. Since I spend a lot of time runing to different. Doctor appointments due to my health condition I always have a bagready to go in my sewing tote that goes with me everywhere. At the young age of 36 I was informed that my carrer as a respiratory therapist was over. Never have sewn on a sewing machine before somethIng just told me to buy one and join a quiltinf class well as you can image it was a devastating experience for me for a few weeks but I hung in there and things became much better for me. The EPP technique was our groups first challenge since we were all new to quilting we all just looked at these hextagons and really wondered how we were to make somerhing out of thwse pices. With me I would rather sew by hand any day od the week than use my machine. It has been awesomw therapy for me. So I set out to just challenge done andby my surprise I was the only on to finish the challenge. Now I always have flower pieces ready to go by my chair and in my bag. Ive tried every method I have found on EPP and my favorite is using wax paper since it keeps tje hexagos retain there shape very well. I actually have made a hextagon 1/4″ used them in a min quilt I entered in our local quilt show didnt win a ribbon but was 1 point from a perfect score. I cherish that progect just as all of you will as you learn this fabulous. EPP technique it is very rewarding in the end to actually see a finished proget you made with your hands. You all can do this! I have a lot of faith I know tjat if I can learn to do this anyone can!!! Good luck to all of you on your adventure with your EPP. It would be awesome to win this table runner when I look at a quilting project someone else has made I think to myself I wonder what stories about this person this project could tell if it couldtalk. Thats the amazing art of quilting ecery project does have secret stories hidden in every stitch and seam about what our minds where thinking at the time we were making our project. It rwally just amazes me how people put a lot of prayers and conversatikn into completing a quilt. Thanks to all for allowing me to post my commet. God Bless to all. MICHE LLE

I’ve made many hexagon quilts and wall hangings. I enjoy the process of making the flowers or diamonds or whatever shape I am creating; each one is a little gem! My advice to a beginner would be start with a small project and focus on what you are working on at that moment. Enjoy the process and don’t look at how far you have to go. It will get done and when it is, you’ll be so pleased with the results! One additional suggestion is to use light weight thread (50 wt for example) and colour match the threads to the hexagons. This will help to disguise any imperfections in the stitches!

The quilts were very well done……I have done some paperpiecing but not Grandma’s garden. Lovely quilts that everyone entered.

I tried paper piecing but found it a little difficult. I kept getting the needle in the paper.

I enjoy hexies as a travel project to always have going. They are amazing, and sometimes I just use them as accents on another type of quilt.

I have never EPP, but it is on my list to try. I even bought some hexie templates at JoAnn’s. Now I need to just sit down and do it. I have lots and lots of scraps to work from.

I haven’t tried EPP. Is there a trick to cutting out all the hexigon shapes?

Great quilts. It’s so hard to pick just two. I’ve never done English paper piecing…just haven’t tried it, but it’s on my “To Do” list. I’ve seen so many pretty quilts using this method.

I have only tried my hand at paper piecing once and that was during last years block of the month on Craftsy. I loved being able to work on the block while watching a show.

I have EPP’d for about 20 years. My best tip is make sure your papers are accurate and your fabric corners tightly folded round them!

  113. Barb L. Avatar

I love the hexagon paper piecing and made a round table topper using fruit fabric and plastic hexes instead of paper. Love them! I love the watermelon quilt and would love that pattern!

I always thought the hexagons and grandma’s flower garden were very old fashioned. Well, they are but the patterns are timeless and beautiful. With new fabrics, this has been totally reinvented!

I have never done English Paper Piecing. I do foundation paper piecing. Seeing the above contest entries I am ready to try. Hope one of the two I voted for wins. So eye appealing.

So beautiful! I have not done EPP but have some hexagon quilts, as Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Think I’ll try the Dresden Wreath first. Thank you. Congratulations to all who shared….they’re all winners…just keeping quilts in the limelight!

I’m quite fond of hexie projects on the machine, or by hand. So versatile from scrappy to totally planned out. And, a great travel project too!

I made coasters for an online ugly fabric swap about three years ago. I really enjoyed it, however have not done any since. The watermelon runner makes me want to try it again.

I have not tried EEP, mostly because I do not enjoy hand sewing. I haven’t researched the machine methods yet, but sounds interesting.

    I love paper piecing because many years ago I was a cross-stitcher – then I purchased my first embroidery machine. I liked those days (after the littles were in bed) to create on a small scale. I like the computerization now; however, I still do EPP to keep my “hand” in !}

I started aanEPP “ISpy”wall hanging for my grandaughter when she was 5 yrs old. She is 21 now and just gave birth to her own daughter, so I guess its time to finish it for my GGdaughter.

I have done Grandmother’s Flower Garden. It is a scrap quilt I started 20 years ago and am still working on it. The quilt is rather large now. I just need to square up the edges and finish it.

When I do english paperpiecing I use handquilting thread. It’s strong and doesn’t tear as easily. As well as doesn’t get tangled up as much. Most of the time I use gray as it matches most colors.

I have done some paper piecing (and I enjoyed it) but don’t believe I have done English paper piecing. I would like to make a quilt with hexagons one of these days–it’s on my to-do list!

I am working on a pies and tarts quilt that has 100 8 piece pies and 100 8 pieced tarts in batiks. Instead of sewing the material to stay on the papers I have used starch and a hot iron. Works beautifully and no thread to remove.

When I first joined a guild, one of our first projects was EPP. We were making a quilt for a raffle. We had been given the background fabric and it was a poly blend. Not too much fun to work with, but I don’t think cotton was the norm in those days. We did get it finished and it was a very successful raffle.

I do not quilt but my mom’s good friend and pen pal in Gernany does and has submitted the project “Thinking of Liz”. I have a friend that I met in Kindergarden we are now in grade 11 and still besties – her family has donated many crafty projects. I would love to win kit for her and maybe one day she would submit a project of our Friendship. Great job everyone! Keep up the great work!

Yes, I have English Paper Pieced and am definitely not an expert but do love to do it. Working on a project at this time but it is tiny hexis and will take some time.

  151. Cindy A. Avatar

Yes, I’ve done English Paper Piecing thanks to Paper Pieces little free pack of hexagons. I turned my little flower into a much-loved pincushion. I do not baste through the paper pieces so they can be reused. I also do not cut exact seam allowances just squares whose edges I fold down and do a running stitch through. Be sure to put a knot in your thread though, otherwise you’ll be going round and round in circles. You’ll never get one of those little hex papers covered! Don’t ask how I know this…
